The brainchild of Scottish-Canadian visionary Jason Wilson, Ashara presents a joyful blend of Scottish folk, global roots and reggae – it’s where Scotland meets Jamaica in Canada! Wilson, who provides vocals, acoustic guitar and piano, is joined by legendary Jamaican-Canadian guitarist Carl Harvey (Toots & The Maytals), and regular Wilson band members, saxophonist Marcus Ali, vocalist Laurel Tubman, drummer Vince Reel and bassist Michael Shapinko.
Then the kicker: Ashara comes with a rotating cast of award-winning Scottish trad musicians, including fiddler Jack Smedley (Rura), the great Perthshire piper Ali Hutton (Old Blind Dogs) and feted accordionist John Somerville (Treacherous Orchestra). The featured special guest is the fabulous Scottish-based Jamaican singer and songwriter Subrina Ward who has herself brought together the musical worlds of Scotland and Jamaica in her own formidable canon.
As well as new songs, Ashara also reimagines songs from the folk tradition such as My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose and Matty Groves, as well as numbers from the variety of repertoires with which these artists are associated including: 54-46 (That’s my Number), The Ballad Of Jack McLaren and the 2021 Canadian reggae chart-topper Ready To Be Loved.
