Chansons, Perth's Chamber Choir, invite you to a seasonal performance of Vivaldi's Gloria and Haydn's Little Organ Mass at St John’s Kirk.

Haydn’s Little Organ Mass should more accurately be described as a Missa Brevis, but takes its nickname, the ‘Little Organ Mass’, from the Organ solo in the Benedictus. Written between 1775 and 1778, this small intimate mass has always been popular conjuring up an image of the small chapel of the Brothers of Mercy in Eisenstadt for whom it was written, and echoes the quiet, devotional character of their worship.

The second half of the concert is a performance of Vivaldi's Gloria in D with soloists and chamber orchestra. Ever since its first modern revival in Siena in 1939, Vivaldi's Gloria is arguably one of the best known and most popular of his choral works. A joyful hymn of praise and worship divided into 12 relatively brief movements that range from festive brilliance to profound sadness. From lilting soprano solos to solemn choral singing with duets and four part harmonies, Vivaldi's Gloria is a masterclass in baroque choral writing. Always the great instrumentalist, Vivaldi doesn’t forget his musicians and the work is dotted with lovely countermelodies enjoyed variously by the violin or oboe, resulting in a work which feels part concerto, part opera - but the effect is one of sacred music’s most uplifting choral works.

There will be drinks served at the end of the concert to allow a chance to meet the performers.

Chansons looks forward to you joining them to enjoy a seasonal concert in the wonderful acoustic of St John's Kirk in central Perth.
