Gade Echoes of Ossian
Grieg Symphonic Dances
Sibelius Symphony No 5

PSO turns to Scandinavia for its Spring Concert, where it finds inspiration a-plenty. In the concert opener, the Danish legend of a magic bird showcases Niels Gade's gift for drama and lyricism in his Echoes of Ossian. Next on the programme are Grieg's Symphonic Dances. Based on Norwegian folk dances, these are in turn acrobatic, graceful, joyous and flirty, before ending with a bridal march. In the second half of the concert, the grandeur of the Finnish landscape is invoked in Sibelius' 5th Symphony, most famously the Swan Hymn of the final movement, inspired by the beautiful sight of 16 swans, which circled over his home deep in the woods before they "disappeared into the solar haze like a silver ribbon".
