Perth rocker Ricky Garton will make his Perth Theatre début when he performs You Look Like A Singer! 65 Years Of Ricky Garton in the Joan Knight Studio on Saturday 2 August.
A regular on the local music scene since he was ‘discovered’ by two guys in the 1950’s who told him he looked like a singer, Ricky will be joined by Dave Amos and Pete Caban and his band The Breakers for a journey through his seven-decade spanning music career.
As well as being his Perth Theatre début, the August gig will be the last time Ricky plays the venue as he is planning to hang up his mic at the end of 2025 after 65 years of performing.
The two guys who approached Ricky in the 50’s were Andy Patterson and Ronnie Mulligan of the Teenbeats, and Ricky promptly joined the band, playing gigs around the area including sell-out shows in Perth City Hall. He then joined another Perth band, The Cyclones, touring from the city up the East Coast of Scotland and spending a month playing the Storyville Jazz Club in Cologne – the first Scottish band to perform there. It was when Ricky was playing with The Cyclones that a young female singer Eve Beatson joined the band – Eve went on to world-wide success as Eve Graham of the New Seekers.
After a brief hiatus when his wife was expecting their second child, the draw of rock and roll pulled Ricky back and he kept on rocking with several more Perth bands including The Icebreakers, the Erle Blue Stars and The Magic Band. He gave country music a try during the 1980’s with The Duke Boys, but rock and roll was always Perth’s very own Elvis’s first love, and he went back to his rock and roll roots joining Ricky and the Breakers 2018.
Commenting on performing in Perth Theatre for the first – and last – time, Ricky said:
“I’m retiring at the end of this year after 65 years of performing in Perth, so it’s great to be able to go out with a bang with my first Perth Theatre gig. I’m looking forward to catching up with the loyal fans who have followed me over the years, it’s going to be a great night of celebration.”
