The world's greatest classical music festival comes to Perth Concert Hall this September for the only Scottish date on the BBC Proms Proms at Chamber Concerts tour.

A chamber concert of Classical traditions and reinventions, BBC Proms at Perth on Sunday 3 September is an exclusive afternoon performance from Scottish pianist Steven Osborne and the award-winning Heath String Quartet. They will perform Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet, a work that harks back to the chamber music of Haydn and his predecessors, revisiting 18th-century forms and gestures through his own distinctive lens. It is paired with Haydn’s own String Quartet in E flat major and Tippett’s Piano Sonata No 2, which captures the fragmentary brilliance of its original title, Mosaics.

Other venues in the Proms at Chamber Concerts series include Aberystwyth (Aberystwyth Arts Centre), Londonderry (Guildhall Derry), Dewsbury (Dewsbury Town Hall) and Truro (Hall for Cornwall), with the BBC Concert Orchestra presenting a concert at the unique Hippodrome in Great Yarmouth as part of their ongoing residency.

Every Proms at performance will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and, for the first time, the majority of concerts will be available on BBC Sounds for 12 months.

As the world’s biggest classical music festival, the BBC Proms offers eight weeks of world-class music-making from a vast array of leading orchestras, conductors and soloists from the UK and around the world. Across more than 80 concerts, the festival aims to offer a summer of music that allows for the most diverse and exciting musical journeys. More than 125 years since it was founded, the driving factor in building a festival of this scale is to offer exceptional music-making at the lowest possible prices, continuing founder-conductor Henry Wood’s original ambition of bringing the best classical music to the widest possible audience. With every Prom broadcast on BBC Radio 3, available across multiple platforms and many televised on the BBC, the Proms reaches far beyond the Royal Albert Hall. The 2023 BBC Proms runs from Friday 14 July to Saturday 9 September.

In-keeping with the BBC Proms aim to make classical music accessible to as wide an audience as possible, £8 Promming tickets for BBC Proms at Perth will be available to purchase from 10am on the day of the concert.

David Pickard, Director, BBC Proms, said:

“Since the inception of the Proms in 1895, the aim has been to bring the best of classical music, performed to the highest of standards, to the widest possible audience. I’m delighted that this summer there will be a BBC Prom chamber concert in every nation of the UK, and that we will visit Perth with the celebrated pianist Steven Osborne and one of this country’s most exciting ensembles, the Heath String Quartet. We hope that audiences will be entertained and inspired by the joy of live classical music.”

James Waters, Creative Director for Classical Music at Perth Concert Hall said:

“We are utterly delighted and honoured that the BBC Proms have decided to include Perth Concert Hall in the world’s biggest music festival. Even more that the programme is built around one of our audience’s favourite artists, the internationally celebrated Steven Osborne.”
