The Show:
Gerda and McKay are the bestest pals in the whole wide world (well certainly in the village of Upper Doonigan!), and spend their days climbing trees, splashing about in the burn, and clambering up Beinn Doon! Every day seems like the summer holidays to them! Nothing and no-one could ever ruin their friendship... surely?
But what's this? The wind has shifted, and there's an icy blast coming down the glen. Old Grannie Frannie McMannie doesn't like it one bit (she'll need to put the heating on noo!) It reminds her of a scary story from long, long ago about an evil, dangerous and cold-hearted woman who lives in an ice palace in the far, far north... The Snow Queen! Nobody is safe from her vindictive ways, especially the young, fun-loving villagers of Upper Doonigan!
And now that young McKay seems to have disappeared into thin air, Gerda needs to find him, and old Grannie Frannie McMannie definitely needs to put her thermals on - she's pure freezin'! The adventure begins, as Gerda sets off on her quest to find McKay, and meets comical crows, gormless gardeners, a talking reindeer and a whole host of other unlikely types along the way, singing, dancing and even chucking sweeties out as they travel north to the icy realm of... The Snow Queen!
Join Grannie Frannie, Gerda, McKay and all their friends (and foes!) in Perth Theatre's The Snow Queen, their 'coolest’ panto yet, from the team that brought you Mother Goose, Aladdin, Jack & The Beanstalk and Cinderella!
The Roles:
THE SNOW QUEEN (female presenting, 35-55): An evil entity who takes great pleasure in ensnaring young villagers and taking them off to her Ice Palace in the Far, Far North, where they will work for her (until she gets bored, and freezes them!) An actor with a great presence, strong singing and dancing/ movement skills, and an ability to have a rapport with an audience (who will hopefully be booing and screaming!). Good comedy chops will be required too.
GERDA McMANNIE (female presenting, 20-30): A young villager, full of the joys of Spring, best pal of McKay McGlumpher, and granddaughter of Grannie Frannie McMannie (the Dame). An old head on young shoulders. Not scared to get involved in scrapes and adventures. An actor with a youthful exuberance, strong singing and dancing/ movement skills, and an ability to make us laugh (lots!) one minute, and have us reaching for our hankies the next minute.
GRETEL McPETAL (female presenting, 20-30): A recent arrival to the village, she is a lively young woman who is forging a career as an influencer/content creator, much to the amusement/annoyance of those around her. She is, however, well intentioned, and genuinely believes that what she does could be helpful to all (and who knows, it might just be...NO SPOILERS!!) An actor, again, with a youthful exuberance and strong singing and dancing/movement skills, and an ability to multi-role (bringing different vocal and movement qualities to the 3 roles). The actor playing GRETEL will also be playing the roles of FLORA McFAUNA, a hippy dippy gardener (with questionable motives) and a MYSTERIOUS OLD WOMAN (who herds Reindeer, obviously) whom GERDA meets on her adventures-but GRETEL will very much be back in the second half!
McKAY McGLUMPHER (male presenting, 20-30): A young villager, GERDA'S best pal, full of fun, mischief and impetuosity...until the SNOW QUEEN'S influence changes him into a cold, callous, sneering and sadly rather unpleasant person to be around. Hopefully not for long though... An actor, yet again, with a youthful exuberance, but who can switch in an instant to cynicism, callousness and cruelty (and back again!). Strong singing and dancing/ movement skills.
We are also looking to cast our Ensemble 1 & 2, who will have small roles within the story. One will understudy all male presenting tracks, and the other all female presenting tracks including The Snow Queen. Understudy rehearsals will be factored into the rehearsal period, and in the early stages of the run. We will cast these actors from the auditionees seen for the above roles.
The suggested playing ages listed are what we envisage but we have some flexibility. We encourage actors of any gender, including non-binary performers, to submit for any role which they would be comfortable playing.
All contracting will be managed by Perth Theatre.
Submissions should be sent to: casting@perththeatreandconcerthall.com with the subject heading The Snow Queen Casting Submission 2025.
Deadline for submissions: Friday 16 May at 18:00.
Auditions will take place in Perth on Monday 2, Tuesday 3 & Wednesday 4 June 2025
