Autumn Sonata by Ingmar Bergman | English translation by Alan Blair | Directed by Tomaž Krajnc | Joan Knight Studio
Set & Costume Designer: Mela Adela | Lighting Designer: Zeynep Kepekli | Répétiteur: Karen McIver
Presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International, on behalf of the Ingmar Bergman Foundation
Autumn Sonata, adapted and directed by Tomaž Krajnc, receives its Scottish première in the Joan Knight Studio, bringing Ingmar Bergman's celebrated exploration of family relationships, emotional distance and unresolved conflict to the stage.
The story centres on Charlotte, a celebrated concert pianist who reunites with her daughter Eva after years of separation. What begins as an affectionate reunion gradually exposes longstanding resentments and painful memories as the two women confront the emotional consequences of a relationship shaped by ambition, absence and unmet expectations. Through their increasingly difficult exchanges,
Autumn Sonata explores the complexity of familial love, the sacrifices associated with artistic ambition and the lasting effects of unresolved personal histories.
The production will be adapted and directed by Slovenian Tomaž Krajnc, an internationally experienced theatre and film director who has chosen to establish his professional practice in Scotland. A graduate of the RCS, Krajnc has developed a career encompassing contemporary adaptations, classical drama, new writing and screen production. His work includes acclaimed interpretations of
1984, The Pillowman and
Macbeth, alongside productions such as
Vanya and
The Fall of Europe.
The production follows Krajnc's earlier artistic residency in Perth Concert Hall's Norie-Miller Studio and brings together an international creative team whose members live and work in Scotland.
Alongside
Dance of Death, Autumn Sonata adds another international dimension to the Produced in Perth season through contemporary interpretations of two celebrated works of Nordic drama. This is particularly timely given Perth & Kinross's growing cultural relationship with these countries, including Perth's successful bid to host the Democracy Festival in May 2027, the first time the event will take place outside the Nordic region.
