Dirty Rotten Scoundrels | Book by Jeffrey Lane | Music & Lyrics by David Yazbek | Directed by Ken Alexander | Musical Director: Hilary Brooks | Choreographer & Associate Director: Sarah Wilkie | Design by Fraser Lappin | Lighting Designer: Wayne Dowdeswell | Main Stage
Based on the film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, written by Dale Launer and Stanley Shapiro & Paul Henning
Presented by arrangement with MUSIC THEATRE INTERNATIONAL
Building on the success of
Restless Natives, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels brings a major musical comedy to Perth Theatre's Main House, directed by Ken Alexander.
Set on the French Riviera, the musical follows two rival con artists, Lawrence Jameson and Freddy Benson, who make their living deceiving wealthy visitors. When the sophisticated Lawrence finds himself competing with the ambitious Freddy, the pair embark on an increasingly elaborate contest to determine who can outwit the other, with unexpected consequences for both.
Combining music, comedy and theatrical spectacle, the production offers a contrasting experience within the Produced in Perth season and an opportunity to delight in a large-scale musical.
About the Director
Ken Alexander began his professional directing career at Perth Theatre, where he trained under Joan Knight OBE through a Scottish Arts Council Trainee Directors Bursary. He subsequently became Associate Director at the Nuffield Theatre in Southampton before holding Artistic Director positions at the Byre Theatre in St Andrews, Perth Theatre, and Liverpool's Royal Court Theatre.
His extensive career encompasses musical theatre, classical and contemporary drama, new writing and pantomime. His credits include the Scottish professional premières of
Into the Woods, Little Shop of Horrors and
The Secret Garden, alongside productions such as
Oliver!, Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off and
The Slab Boys.
Alexander has also directed extensively at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, including
Whisky Galore – a Musical, for which he received a Critics' Award for Theatre in Scotland Best Director nomination. His Perth Theatre production of Peter Arnott's
The Signalman then received three Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland, including Best Production, with Alexander nominated for Best Director.
Now based in Australia, Alexander’s return to direct
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels marks his first professional production in Scotland since relocating overseas. This homecoming is particularly significant, reflecting Joan Knight's legacy of nurturing artistic talent whose careers have extended well beyond Perth.
