Two of the best loved symphonies in all classical music is a real luxury in an evening. Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ symphony is almost from another world of haunting darkness with occasional aspects of optimism. Beethoven’s ‘Pastoral’ includes a shepherd's pipe, birds singing, streams flowing, and a thunderstorm followed by a hymn of thanksgiving for the wonderful world of nature. Saint-Saëns’s cello concerto is full of romantic Gallic charm. It is hard to imagine a more enjoyable evening of symphonic music.
