Lunchtime Concert: Bach's Goldberg Variations

Supposedly written to mitigate the sleeplessness of a Russian ambassador the Goldberg Variations are one of Bach’s most striking compositions. 33 variations on a simple aria theme are full of the ripest musical invention and, with Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations one of the ultimate challenges to a virtuoso pianist.
