A young, queer man leaves his small hometown to take refuge in the bright lights and warm embrace of the big city. He discovers community and joy in the city’s queer scene, but soon finds himself navigating a terrifying unfolding health crisis, almost completely ignored by the government.
Set against the backdrop of Section 28 and the AIDS crisis, Small Town Boys is a captivating, moving new show, exploring the resilience of queer love and community in the face of unimaginable grief. This immersive, site-specific piece draws audiences into the world of the 80s club scene, bringing a pivotal era of queer history to life.
Choreographed and imagined by Shaper/Caper’s award-winning Artistic Director and Clore Fellow, Thomas Small, Small Town Boys features original music from Mark Franks of platinum-selling band The Overtones, beautiful set and costume design by Becky Minto and associate designer Fraser Lappin, and striking lighting design by Dylan Baillie.
